Are You Able to Solve This? The Overlooked Netherlands Invention Which Forged the Contemporary Globe
One can find numerous contenders to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill invented by Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working over 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber might be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical cutter, that turned timber into boards with almost no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct ships faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial and artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The First True Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component transformed the circular movement to up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so the machine acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each descending stroke and advancing on every upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
