EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
