Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his £25,000 honor prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the Britain's independent concert spaces.

The star was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release the album was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports local stages.

He also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across the UK.

These funds helped venues that were facing possible closure due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces were granted monetary aid in modernizing facilities and gear that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

When they earned the prize in 1996 for their release their work, frontman Cocker announced that the band would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite divided her bounty among a few charities, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I donated a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," she explained to the media.

Two years ago, the band contributed their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their act, as well as other local music groups.

And winners that year they donated their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"Winning was quite enough," said singer Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning touched the lives of others."

Last week, the trust revealed it had protected a couple of local spots in that region, by bringing them into local control.

The first in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is backed by the arts council and supporters who acquire "shares" in the buildings.
