Trump Demands Imprisonment of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Deploy in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump posted on his platform early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders are members of the Democratic party.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of state military personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite vehement protests from state officials including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via online channels, stating: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, military troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", despite police data indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard forces preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials indicated the soldiers would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with state guard patches were observed at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities imposed flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has intensified deportation operations in the city in the past month, sparking protests, particularly near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on Monday prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said that Trump is trying to "rationalize and make acceptable the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. Yet, the president has stated he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a president to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to put down an insurrection or are resisting federal law.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or discussed sending troops to at least 10 cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In the city, for instance, murders were down 31% to 278 through August, per law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on Wednesday found that most Americans disapprove of the sending of military forces without an external threat.
