Working Life of Earnings Inadequate for UK Employees to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Report Reveals

Per fresh research, the median worker in the UK would have to work half a century of salary to attain the net worth of the wealthiest 10% in the country.

Growing Financial Divide Across Decades

The analysis examined net worth data covering the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in the mid-2000s, it would have taken nearly four decades of average worker salary to join the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the report stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings during their working years would remain unable to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The research found that the disparity between the wealth of the typical individual and someone in the richest segment was £1m in 2006-08, but had increased to £1.3m in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The economist further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is low – those who commence life affluent tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the wealth gap growing in actual numbers, the share of total wealth in the UK held by the richest households – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," per the study.

Over this timeframe, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from three times the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Financial Divide

So-called "unearned" gains, via rising house prices and variations in superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap since 2010, according to the study.

These increases typically went to elderly homeowners, the analysis reveals – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Generational Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from £135k in pre-financial crisis, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Variations

Additionally, there were stark area-based disparities, with the median value of wealth in 2020-22 reaching £290,000 in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate numerous families were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The median home in the bottom income bracket saw their available funds rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the median home in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
